senators, what you hear is please follow the hillary clinton model this notion she came in and had star power and laid low and didn't do very much, same thing for barack obama in the u.s. senate. so the expectation, if not the mandate for liberal senators is follow this employed he will that says sit down and shut up. the encouraging thing about elizabeth warren is she is saying i'm going to play rules is i am here as a senator. i campaigned on these things. shies effectively say i go made promises to voters about what i would stand up for and the serious thing to do is to stand up for those things and fulfill those pledges when i'm in office. cenk: i think part of what that executive is saying is hales know your role. your roam as a democratic is to pretend to be progressive during the elections but once the election is over, your role is to work for us, the financial executives. secondly, the democrats are paid to shut up and the republicans paid to run wild. that's how we get the imbalance policy that we winds up getting not political results in terms of who wins, but policy results.

when bill clinton got elected versus when ronald reagan got elected, the electorate has been changing for a very long time but the right didn't notice because they have been able to use these tricks to gin up their base and maximize their vote and they have always used the far right to do it. they get them excited over cultural issues -- >> what went wrong this time? for every african-american vote or latino vote you were going to lose a more conservative white person from say the southwest, but that doesn't exactly happen. the white vote sort of been up a bit for obama and then the african-american and the other minority votes zoomed. >> and part of the problem is number one they have lost the cities. they're losing including the urban white vote, losing more educated white voters among with minority vote% and losing young voters. part of the problem is them. the messaging they use to gin up their base turns off obviously younger people, it turns off women, turns off minorities and this time they really got minute norths excited about voting. there was already loyalty to barack obama

it at "the washington post" today. strikes me bill clinton in 1998, the one time since the james monroe presidency that in the sixth year the white house is actually managed to pick up house seats and very hard to do that in the sixth year but what's the mood picking up among democrats in washington about how 2014 is shaping up for them and how the issues play in to them? >> i was asking that question today. they're not counting the chickens just yet. not only a different electorate in the polls in midterms, much more republican electorate than in presidential years, but you have a very different congress than in the mid-1990s. not that many districts up where obama -- where republicans sitting in seats obama won that district. there's not that much swing going on here. that doesn't mean democrats can't win back the house if things continue to go bad and what we're fighting over now put out a list of 27 members targeting over the sequester is a fight for this year to sort of set the stage for next year. still too far out to say democrats are in a position to win and we can say it's hard
